The Gregg County WX Net is activated by the National Weather Service as Tornado Watches are issued for Gregg County. Severe weather may also develop while under a Severe Thunderstorm Watch. Activation for activity of this nature is on an as needed basis.

During activations, Gregg County WX Net monitors weather developments during the Watch/Warning period and is in contact with City of Longview Public Communications with updates on current weather conditions. As severe weather approaches adjacent counties, trained spotters are called on, both in static and mobile positions, to report activity meeting severe criteria to the Gregg County WX Net control operator who in turn relays pertinent weather information to the City of Longview and the National Weather Service in Shreveport, LA.

SKYWARN training is held in Gregg County twice yearly in order to maintain a skillful level of knowledge and reporting techniques as outlined by the National Weather Service.
